African country Uganda has qualified for the T20 Cricket World Cup for the first
time in history and the role of a player of Pakistani origin has been very
important in the process. All-rounder Riazat Ali Shah of Uganda cricket team
played a key role in taking the team to the next round but interestingly, he
belongs to Gilgit-Baltistan and his story of reaching Uganda is very
interesting. Uganda needed to beat Zimbabwe to qualify and in this match Riazat
not only got the crucial wicket of Sikandar Raza but also managed to put his
team in a stable position by scoring 42 runs off 26 balls.
This tournament was being played in the African country of Namibia and while speaking exclusively with the BBC from there, Riazat said that 'to play in the World Cup it was necessary for us to win against Zimbabwe, we sat down and we decided that we Can beat any team.
Zimbabwe is a Test cricket playing nation and also defeated Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup held in Australia. The T20 World Cup qualifying round is usually a golden opportunity for lesser-known teams to come into the limelight and the Uganda cricket team has been preparing for it for a long time. Riazat Ali Shah of Pakistani origin wants to face Pakistan in the World Cup. He says that it seems that Pakistan and India will be in the same pool. If we are also in this pool, I will enjoy the match with Pakistan. "I would like to take Babar Azam's wicket and face Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah and score runs against them.
